Trying out a new style...I thought this was a good illustration to test it out on. I don't know how I feel about it though.....I don't not like it. So that's something.

Working on a couple different styles...I really enjoy them all for different reasons! Also some of the images below aren't finished but the process has been fun figuring it all out! :)
I've been pushing myself to have environments for my characters, to do this, I try to draw 3-4 5x4 illustrations a day. It's been fun but hard at the same time. I'm really getting use to characters interacting, trying to play with composition and character expressions. I don't think I have a problem with character expression, but I am working on eyes. As you can see below, I some characters have dots while others have a more natural looking eye. I like moving from one to the other. I mean some times a characters just calls for dots while another needs the natural eye look. I've learned that from studying Jon Klassen and Christian Robinson's work, they do the same thing it's whatever the character calls for!
I'm looking forward to doing more, but sticking to the 3-4 a day. Since they are small knocking out 4 in 2hrs, more or less, is doable but I'm also hoping to be able to sketch faster so when I'm in the sketch phase for assignments it will only take me few days to get the sketches knocked out and then revise! Here are my goals for the next few weeks! Goals:
So, watercolor....I've been fighting the idea of really diving into the world of watercolor for some time now. I've always loved pen and ink and watercolor but I never thought I was really strong at it...SO! I started playing around in my sketchbook, a few days testing colors and seeing how I naturally work with the medium. I've watched a handful of tips and tricks videos on YouTube and I feel like I'm getting more confident with it. I mean watercolor is a unpredictable medium so I can only prep myself so much but I jumped in and to be honest, I am loving it! I kind of knew I would but I never gave myself the time to explore and grow with it. I really wish I had but I am excited to see where all of this goes and what artwork I create!
I've been doing a lot of portraits lately so I thought I'd share some of my sketches, the place I tend to start when coming up with ideas.
This one took much longer than I wanted it to take. The text placement was a bit of a challenge since I didn't really plan out the layout and I didn't even know I wanted text in the design until after doing the focal image. But I am really happy with how this came out and I look forward to the rest of the handful of portraits I plan to do! *Excited* |
